Colombian sub-league team Tigres FC announced that the club’s president, Edgar Paez, was shot dead after the team’s loss on Saturday.
According to local media reports, the 63-year-old was driving home with his daughter when he was killed by two men on a motorcycle near the stadium after a 2-3 home loss to Athletic.
His daughter was unharmed and authorities are now investigating the murder.
The club said in a statement, “The Tigers and the sports community are shocked by this incident.”
His commitment to the team and his dedication to the development of sports in our region left an indelible mark on all who had the honor of knowing him.”
Fernando Jaramillo, president of the Colombian Professional Football Region (DIMAYOR), which administers the professional league, mourned Paz’s passing.
Jaramillo said, “His respect for his friends, his firm and respected stance, and his love for the sport we all love – soccer – set him apart. “
A minute’s silence will be observed in Paz’s honor during the next two rounds.
