The Chargers played above themselves despite going down 17-20 to the playoff hunting Dallas Cowboys on Monday night.

The Chargers were left to rue a final, well, charge for a dramatic victory but ultimately fell to a Dak Prescott inspired performance.

Chargers head coach Brandon Staley admitted his side were close to upsetting the Cowboys and feels his team is catching up to some of the best franchises this season.

“It was 20-17 between two really good teams,” Staley said. “We can learn from how we played at the finish in order to close it out.

The Chargers are third in the AFC West with a 2-3 record and a game against the red-hot Chiefs next up.

Talking about the closeness of their week 6 loss to Dallas the HC continued, “We’re driving down to win the game at the end of the game. That’s a really good football team over there.

“They’ve won 12 games the last two seasons and gone deep into the playoffs. It was a high-level game between two teams that are really, really good,”

The Cowboys were good though and Prescott in particular stood out with 21-30 passes, seven runs for 40 yards and one TD.

The Cowboys are an exciting team but the game itself was ugly with 20 penalties, 11 against the Dallas team.

Staley said. “I just think we’ve got to play the game a little more on our terms. I think it starts with protecting the passer better through the run game, keepers, action, making sure those guys don’t get their ears pinned back and they’re able to get off the rock, because they have a lot of good rushers there.”

But in the NFL a win is a win, and a loss is a loss, doesn’t matter how well it is dressed, or served.
