On Sunday MLB commemorating the season and its performers unveiled the 20 Gold Glove winners from both the American League and National League.
Looking to its genesis, Baseball glove manufacturer Rawlings created the award in 1957, and winners receive a glove made of gold lamé-tanned leather attached to a walnut base.
Since then, The Gold Glove has been awarded to fielders who showcase standout performances at a consistent level throughout the season.
The awards and winners are determined by managers and coaches who get to vote on the positions, however, they cannot vote for their own players.
2023 season is special and memorable in all aspects as there are 13 first-time winners, the second most since the award was established in 1957, trailing only last year’s 14.
A Gold Glove category for utility players was asp introduced in 2022 and also the fourth consecutive year that there have been at least 10 first-time winners, extending a record.
Another storyline, someone other than Nolan Arenado was going to be named the NL’s best defender at third base, which is the first time since 2012.
